I'm wondering how members here dispose of old antifreeze. Our recycling centers take used oil but none seem to take old antifreeze. I know that annually there is a day for taking in household waste, but that's a ways off and I'm curious as to how most of you handle this and what the experiences are (for example do local garages take it willingly?). Thanks for the advice.
This may be politically incorrect, but just dump it down the drain. While ethylene glycol is poisonous to critters that drink it straight, it's not really that bad of stuff and will dilute away to harmless in the sewer system. And as far as I know, there's not any laws against doing that in most places for private residences. Businesses can't put anything down the drains, though. That may get some of you upset.... As the chemist I work with says, "The solution to pollution is dilution".
we were happy to take it at the shop where i used to work. we had an antifreeze recycler, so it was almost like getting free antifreeze. it just needs filtered and chemically treated before it can be re-used. (i dont think it's ever really as good as new stuff. the half-life of ethylene glycol i think is very short once exposed.)
I wouldn't use recycled antifreeze in any cars I cared about. There's additives included in antifreeze that passivate the steel and cast iron parts in the cooling system that keep it from rusting. These additives only last about 2 years anyway in new antifreeze. Recycled stuff wouldn't protect your engine from corrosion.
ditto on that. i had to do it at the shop though, and plead ignorance most of the time. the additives used when recycling are supposed to fix it, but i dont trust it.
LMAO @ a felony!!! I hardly believe that, Amervo...send it to: Massachusetts Democratic Cheap Drink Society (Be sure to label it ATTN: Kitty Dukakis, Treasurer) :p
start believing. it is considered a hazardous waste, and is covered under the Clean Water Act. .. it may be directed mainly towards businesses though, like Bob said. Do some Googling. It's out there.
i have never heard of the MDCDS, sounds pretty cool, like the Half Fast Walking Club.
Well Kelly , personnally I dont drink out of the toilet, so.....who knows??
So Kelly , what Amervo says is a felony up there in Maryland, is not in Texas! Copied from City of Houstons website (thx for looking up, Kel):
Reuse If the antifreeze is unused and in good condition, try to find a neighbor, friend, or family member that could make good use of it.
Disposal If you live in the City of Houston, used antifreeze can be disposed of by pouring into your toilet. The wastewater treatment plants will not be adversely affected by this. Both used and unused antifreeze can be disposed of by bringing it to the City of Houston's Consumer Recycling Center, located at 5815 SW Freeway, at Westpark. Please limit your load to 5-gallons. (You can also bring a lot of other recyclable items to this facility including used oil, latex paint, car batteries, paper, plastic, glass, aluminum, tin and phone books.)
So Dave , you might check w your locality? its evidently different in different places! And as I think I remember, you work in one state ,live in the other...you may even have two different laws to contend with..?
just about everything you do up north is a felony according to those liberal dummycrats.we should serve them antifreeze in their martinis at their next convention

They also say it has such bad traffic....whomever writes that has never driven in LA or Rome or Stockholm or Paris...its a breeze driving here compared to Stockholm where pedestrians pass you and you never catch up ..... Houston is such a "small town" , at least it feels that way , I usually call it the worlds biggest small town.....
now I`m going out to lunch , sit outside for a burger under some shade trees!

Allright. Everyone take a deep breath, relax, and hit the cancel key before they make any more political statements. This site has been pretty free of it which has been amazing to me. Lets not blow it and wreck this site. God knows I've got some opinions I'd like to share...
again, I guess I will have to 'monitor' this thread now! hmmmm...
I agree Bob, No political stuff , nor religious etc...wer`e NOT PY, were better than that!
borderline......so far.....
got lots of political views here too, but I am keeping those out of here, hoping everyone does likewise... lets not wreck Geoffs site!

Antifreeze is considered a hazardous waste. In my county, hazardous waste collections are scheduled to allow residents to bring in a variety of stuff, including antifreeze. I believe some parts places may also take it.
