I have a 68 coupe with a 400. The car came with an alternator with an internal regulator. But the wiring was still running thru the external regulator. I purchased the right alternator for the external regulator and will install. That should take care of the charging issue. What has me stumped is the new alternator needs a ground wire attached to it so I'd have to assume there should have been a ground wire in the wiring loom. After getting into the wiring loom I found a black wire and a green wire, both had been snipped and wrapped. The thing that makes this odd is that as these wires run down the loom, away from the alternator, they turn and run back to the firewall. I can not find these wires on any of the wiring diagrams I'm finding on the internet. Can anyone tell me what these wires were or are suppose to be used for and why there wasn't a ground wire in the loom for the altenator. Thanks in advance.
No. This isn't the case. The alternator that accepts a plug that has a blue wire and a black/white wire that runs to the external regulator. Also in the loom is the red wire that connects to the batt terminal on the alternator. These wires are green and the other is black. So they were suppose to run from the alternator to the firewall. Like I said the ends have been cut and I can't find them on any wiring diagram.
I have two green wires on my 69 one is for the temperature sender and the other one is looped back inside with the black wire and caped off . This a new wiring harness from M & H Electric Fabricators via Ames performance I only have three wires going to the alt red and black for the batt and the two wires on the plug. I would say the other two are spare wires or for some option you don't have
(The alternator is grounded by the case when it is installed.)
Ok, the only other thing I can think of right now would be the one wire for the idle stop solenoid, and/or the two wires for the kickdown switch (only on ST300's and TH400's)
Thanks for the info. I'll track them down into the pass compartment and see where they lead. If I get some sort of positive location to where they go I'll post it.
Dr. Drivability you were right. Found them on a wire diagram. The green one was for the temp sensor and the black one was the idle stop sensor. Thanks again guys. One other thing. The charging system shows an idiot light/gen light integrated into the charging system. If that bulb was burnt out or not in at all would that stop my charging system from working?
It shouldn't IF the factory wiring is intact, if you turn the key to "ON" the GEN light should light up and then go off when the car is started....if the charging system is working properly.
