Hey, i was about to install my valley pan on my motor today, and as i was trying to fit it with the gasket, it seems the gasket does not seem to make a really good fit with the valley pan in place, and it is a fel pro gasket so it does have quality, it is a cork gasket, and was just curious would anyone suggest using silicone over the gasket, or just use the gasket as it seems to be thick and maybe its just me, but seems like it doesnt look like it will make the best seal, anybody have any pointers on which of the two to use? thanks Nick
Hey thanks Jim, ya the gasket looks like it doesnt even want to make a good seal, im going to use silicone gasket maker, it will probably seal way better. thanks Nick

Do a trial fit and make sure you don't have any large gaps. You can bend the lip a bit if you do. I've used the gasket and a thin bead of Polygrip on each side with no problems on close to a dozen engines, as long as the lip is flat. Tighten the bolts evenly, about two turns at a time, and watch the gasket so that you stop before overtightening. Your choice.
Tom, is there a big difference in the permatex black and permatex blue? I bought the blue permatex to somewhat go along with the pontiac blue paint i'm putting on the engine? I can't remeber if it was just a colour difference or a colour and temperature rating difference.I have yet to use it so it's not too late for me to swap it for the black.I used the black last time around and held well.

Thanks Jake. Is it better for my application because of the paint colour of motor?

Thanks Tom So the blue should be just fine to use "almost" anywhere for a gasket, on the motor, with its temp rating.
