Alternator failed and looking for suggestions on a new replacement. 1968 Firebird 400 (Original Motor), air conditioning. Should I just go purchase a new alternator from local Canadian Tire, Parts Source, Napa, etc? Is there a specific type I should get? I am also thinking of starting to 'black-out' the engine compartment as opposed to chrome. Is it possible to paint or coat the alternator black? Suggestions?
Gus68 - I'm in Wpg so I will look for someone here to rebuild it. BTW our cars are very similar, I will have to send you some pics sometime. Mine is a convertible as well. Red.

+1 on the rebuild suggestion. Alternators are fairly simple and it would be easy to find what failed. If you do rebuild it there may be higher output options by just changing the stator.
Rebuild it yourself, as long as your armature, and field windings are good, you can order a rebuild kit online and do it yourself, that's what I did with mine, but mine is numbers matching date coded to my 67.
