Monroe 58273 Shocks - supposed to be for towing & hauling, but it says they fit 1st gens. Anyone install them or take them out?
I have an old set stuck (front) they have the additional coil spring and that coil part hits the bottom control arm hole so they don't slide out the bottom of the lower control arm. I cant figure out how they were ever installed in the first place.
Can you try to unscrew it out? The spring is coiled, so it might work. If that does not work... I presume that you have the car supported by the crossmember and weight off the LCA? You could try jacking the LCA up so the hole is not offset so far.
Not to hijack your thread, but I noticed on the Monroe site from your link that you can search your shock application by license plate number?!? I tried it, and it works... To my knowledge, that info is only held in one place, the state*s DMV. I wonder how much is paid for access to that database? And how much data is actually provided? Cal
Probably going to have to pull the lower ball joint and drop the control arm to get enough clearance to pull the coil over out.
Whoever put them in, was probably trying to solve a worn out coil spring issue.
Yeah leaning towards doing this - think I might still have to cut the mounting ears off the shock bottom but maybe it can be angled through somehow if I can get the coild spring off first. PIA - so noody else has these on huh? Maybe the spring on mine has widened at the bottom over time with weight and it used to be smaller than the body - but man the body has square sides just to iget it through the bottom - and it scapes sliding down what I can move until I hit the shock spring.
The car has big drag Mickey Thompsons on the back so someone was making a stiff front for drag racing or just solving bad springs.

1968 Fbird Conv - Well its mostly there. 8) - mine 2015 1979 Camaro RS - Summer DD - mine 2013 Now where did I put my flashlight? ;(
Had to cut the bottom pins off - drop the lower control arm and remove the spring to get the shocks completely out. Was taking this suspension stuff apart anyway because I'm replacing my subframe - just had to do it a bit sooner than I planned. Still don't know how they were installed to begin with, and the shock load springs didnt seem bent but are clearly larger than the bottom shock hole.
