Can someone tell me the best way to get a loose shift knob tightened up. The one I have on my 69 bird keeps popping off, and spins on the shift rod. The bird emblem (button) also will not stay on, the metal retaining clip doesn't seem to help. (Automatic Shifter) Thanks, your input is appreciated.
Sure you don't have my car I have the same issue. There is a special clip you need, but I can't find it in any catalogs. It's a u shape, but square if that makes sense. I found it broken under my console - been this way since I bought the car. Very annoying to have the button stick to your thumb or fall off after you put car in gear!
My '69 console auto shifter has a circlip on the bottom of the knob to keep it from going down, and another circlip under the bird button to keep it from pulling up. It is also indexed with a pin to keep it from spinning. Once the shifter knob is securely in place, the bird button should snap in properly. I just had it apart over the weekend for cleaning and lubrication, and it works like new now.

It's easy to pull off the shifter knob. First, remove the Firebird button, there is a slot in the side to help lift it off. Pull straight up.
Next, use retaining ring pliers to open up the retaining ring, and lift the ring off. Pull straight up on the woodgrain knob. Then you can remove the two screws for the shifter plate and change the light bulb and lubricate the shifter. You really don't need to remove the console to lubricate the shifter, just pack rags over the carpet and over the console. I use a silicone based lubricant as it seems to work for a long time before gumming up.
