Hey, just probably a stupid question, but is it coolant or what that flows between that small hole, where the two surfaces meet between in the front of the intake and the water pump, and also what gasket if any is supposed to go in between there? thanks Nick
It's coolant, and a thick rubber donut goes between the two.
Many will tell you that you need loads of silicone to get it to seal. I've never had a problem when the bolt hole threads are chased and that bolt is tightened first, before tightening down the rest of the intake manifold bolts.
Make sure you chase the threads in the hole, even with a brand new aftermarket manifold. Especially with a brand new afternarket manifold!
Oh man, that thing will leak bad if you don't have the thick o-ring/ gasket in there. I first used the small o-ring that came with a Felpro engine gasket kit (maybe it was for something else I'm thinking now , but upon initial fire up it was leaking bad right there. I even snugged up that long water pump to intake bolt first. Then since it was spewing out I cranked down on that bolt and it snapped. Had to remove intake and get the busted bolt out. I then used an intake gasket set from NAPA which has a real thick o-ring and no sealant. No leaks at all. Never take for granted the o-ring. NASA learned that the hard way as well...
Thanks guys, uh oh I had almost installed it without that in place, i wasnt sure what went in there or if silicone did, but thanks all once again, first pontiac motor being built here so you guys are definatly helping out big time with this. Thanks once again! Nick
