im wondering when did pontiac put vin# on blocks im looking for a 1968 code wz engine for my firebird that came original in it to make it correct wallace racing thought it was in 1969 i was wanting to make it a number matching which would be easy if no vin is stamped on block
The VIN for '67 and later Pontiacs is located on the passenger side of the timing chain. The timing chain cover is hiding it.Its stamped vertical in between the two timing cover bolt holes. The date code is stamped by the distributor hole. It will be the typical 4 digit code. The block casting code is just behind the #8 cylinder. This is probably the easiest and most recognizable number. So, check it first and see if youre on the right track. It will decipher the year and engine size. Both the date code and block codes are raised digits and part of the mold. Whereas the VIN is a manual stamped code. The problem with any of the manual stamping is that youre relying on the factory worker to be having a good day that day. Good times, Ray
My number's matching June '67 built Firebird 400 does NOT have a VIN stamped on the block. However, the Motor Unit Number matches that on my PHS documents.
2012 Mustang Boss 302 #1918, Competition Orange. FGF replacement 2006 Mustang V6 Pony, Vista Blue. Factory ordered. 2019 BMW X3 (Titled to the wife, but I'm always driving it for her. So I'm claiming it) Old projects, gone but not forgotten: 1967 FB 400, original CA car. After 22 years of work, trashed by the guy who was supposed to paint it. I had to sell it. 1980 Turbo Trans Am 1970 Mustang fastback, 351C 4Bbl, auto 1988 Mustang GT, 5 speed 1983 F-150 4x4, built 302 1994 Chevy K2500 HD 4x4, 454 TBI
There is no such thing as making a car "Numbers Matching." Unless you have all the documentation and the original engine/trans/rear end, you're commiting fraud, even if it's on yourself.
You can't stamp the VIN on a black that didn't have it, because the motor unit number (see Salmon's post) won't be right. If you mill the face of the block to re-stamp the engine unit number as well, then you might just as well stamp the block with some Ram Air code and sell it on eBay to some unsuspecting fool.
Here is a question along the lines of matching number hopefully some of you vintage fiebird guys can help me with. Have 67 400 with PHS documents. YT engine code matches build sheet. Went to replace water pump. Bam it has a 69 or newer timing chain cover and 11 bolt waterpump. Can a correct 67 timing chain cover be found and it should work? Or is something else going on here?
It's possible that your timing chain cover was replaced which required a new water pump, or vice-versa. Finding 8-bolt timing covers is harder than finding 11-bolt.
The timing covers are interchangeable. You should be able to find one.
I prefer the 11-bolt water pumps because they seal better (IMHO) and because you can get aluminum high-flow in 11-bolt, but not always in 8.
The six digit number matches the phs found on the passenger front block. Yes the 69 yt crossed my mind but the engine number thing seems to eliminate a engine swap. I thought maybe they had different timing cover things going on. As I research on py forum it seems that until recently a 69 plus cover was readily available. Well now that is over and the only one I found was at Franks pontiac parts for a $350.00 tag. He said it was common to swith over for better cooling, but vary tight supply, equalling bid $$.
