Looking for info and possible replacement of attached steering wheel for a '68 with standard Ivy interior. What style steering wheel is this? Common, because I cant seem to locate similar. What is standard horn button, current one I dont believe is correct? Any deluxe ivy steering wheels available?
It looks like the standard 68 wheel with a deluxe enter cap. The correct cap is silver, with the arrowhead in the center. It says energy absorbing on it too.
99.9% sure that's the correct standard wheel, but to make sure, you should pull the wrap off the the wheel and look. Those are pretty rare wheels as most were junked during the re-call on them and replaced with the wood looking sport wheels. That is definately the deluxe center cap, he probably couldn't find an original std. cap.
I have a standard wheel as well with two caps - one that needs restored I would sell cheap so that it could be restored, and one that is in almost perfect condition that I might sell as well. Ones in good condition are not easy to find anymore, took me a long time to get this one. They do say energy absorbing on them, pretty cool looking old school cap.

Thanks for the info. Think the standard wheel is worth repairing? I'll send e-mail, as I would be interested in the cap that you have that needs restoration.
Got your PM, I'll get you some pics of the cap. Yes, I do think the wheel is worth repairing . Do you have the PHS for your car? It would tell you what interior and wheel your car came with. Based on my experience, they are also cheaper to repair than the the deluxe wheels.

Miles, that wheel looks Fantastic!! Thanks for posting that picture, I'm glad that horn button worked out for you so well. That is a pretty rare steering wheel you have and it is in fantastic shape now. Did you do the restoration?

Appreciate the comments.... yes, I did the restoration other than the final paint and clear coat. Just didnt have a gun that I felt comfortable with shooting it and the final matte needed to match. In retrospect, would have done the resin repair and sanding in sections rather than the whole wheel at once as it became a battle of will to get it right. Great winter project. Still haven't seen one at a show yet, but hoping to someday to compare stories. Words of wisdom, or more appropriate, comments from a novice....toughest part was the spoke to central hub transition. Had a pretty good crack there, and it took a couple of tries to get the multiple transitions there right.
I have thought about tackling that repair but always wondered about getting the correct red color look for mine. I wondered how the POR15 putty might work.
GM knew that the cracked wheels were a problem and even replaced mine under warranty back about '69-'70 and it too cracked promptly.
They actually have a combo of both on them- it's possible the chrome or shine could have wore off or been removed due to flaking or dullness.
The combo of the two on one cap is pretty cool to look at., I have seen 3 survivors in the original boxes (including the one I had) and they are all really cool.

I had a deluxe ivory wheel but sold it 4 or 5 years ago.
Like what you did with the standard wheel. Very well done.

I asked Doug who the girl was in the pic, and if I remember right she was a friend? Nice looking gal - great pic.
He did my wheel as well, and it turned out fantastic.
