I put in a new switch 3 years ago. Used very little and the up side has failed. I have heard they do not last very long. Would be nice to find a OEM so that may last longer.
How weird- mine failed on me Friday as well. Brand new- used very little, bought from classic. Same thing- up side failed. I almost called you to see who you went with for yours, but got busy and was going to ring you and 68tpls400 today.
Anyone have one that has stood the test of time?

I know we have talked about this before but I was looking in the Parts manual and the 67-68 switch show part number 3840095. When you look it up, it is the switch with the chrome lever rather then the black.
If I remember correctly, did'nt we conclude that the 68 did not have a chrome switch?
If I remember tonight, I'll look at my wife's car. Hers is all original with power top. (and still works)
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. I suspect the motor draws more current when raising the top verses lowering it. Pretty sure my switch is original and it is black. This is for a 67 though.
That is what I read Larry. Lot of people put in a relay to take the load from the switch to the relay. I would rather not do that but a lot do and it seems it would be very worth while to do it.

I was looking at this item. It appears as a much better switch then what some repops I have seen. Link
I went ahead and got a NOS one this time and I hope it does better.
Hmm. It says in the description that the switch itself is not NOS, so is it just the housing? idk. Keep us posted on the longevity it provides., i am really curious as to what a good switch is.

That is not the one I purchased. Just the one I was looking at before I purchased a NOS one.
Does the NOS one look any different? I assume a black paddle? I went ahead and bought one that says it can hold up the extra amp draw, but it was only 35.00 so we will see if it's any good.

Yes it appears to be made a little different. Here are a couple pics of the one I got.
I ordered this one too before I got the NOS one. I'll just keep it as a spare in the car in case I get out and the switch fails. This may be the one like you got. Link

I took my old switch apart and cleaned up the contact and re spring the contact a little and it seems to be working again. acording to my ohm meter. I'll check it in the car tonight.
Craig you may want to take yours apart and see if you can clean the contact and get it working again too. Prolong using the new one or keep it as a backup.
I will do that, interesting on how those switches do vary like that. Thanks for the detailed comparison, and let me know about the switch working or not. So did you ever determine a cause of failure on it that stuck out? Was it corrosion or potential weak spring maybe?

I belive that the little black cap under the rocker switch might have got stuck. It seems that the light plastic might get hot enough to slightly deform and it caused it to make a indention that made it hang on the spring under it.
There was also a spot were the points contact. I cleaned them up slightly where they connect and re-sprung the wire.
