When I'm driving and the engine bay has warmed up, hot air blasts out of my vents, under the dash, and out of the defrost vents into the car cabin. All the heater slides are off and it only happens when moving so I'm thinking it has to be the vent system. It's pretty uncomfortable out here in Phx when it gets warm to have all this hot air blowing on you.
Any suggestions on how to stop the airflow? I know next to nothing about the heater mechanical system. Non a/c car btw.
You can put a heater control valve inline in one of the heater hoses under the hood -OR- you can run the heater hose that goes from the water pump housing straight to the back of the passenger cylinder head, bypassing the heater core altogether.
The slide is attached via cable to a mechanical door in the heater box which shuts off the flow of air. If the slide seems to move without any resistance then the cable may be broken. If you can hear the door move in the heater box then it's possible the foam seal is deteriorated and no longer sealing. The kick panel vents and dash Astro vents are also sealed with foam rubber flaps. These vents will leak if flaps are deteriorated.
Pretty sure the fan isn't running. I disconnected it.
Which slide are you referring to? The slides near the dash vents are frozen. The kick panels have speakers in them (came that way when I bought it) so those slides don't slide either.
Ok, so made some progress today. Sealed off the vents coming out of the heater box and that made a big difference. Buddy of mine suggested adding a manual shut off valve on the heater hose to stop the hot water from flowing through the core. Seems like a good fix to me. Anyone done this?
That's exactly what I did. $10 part at Oreillys. Works perfect. Now the [censored] thing is drive-able.
btw DR, I see now that this is exactly what you suggested. I had to learn more about the mechanics of the system to understand what you were suggesting. Thanks for the heads up.
