I want to repair and repaint the steel portion of the dash on my 69. FAQ's here didn't really help. Online searches didn't either. However I found one site "old ride.com" that has paint codes for the 69 Grand Prix. I imagine the Firebird would have used the same color and this site does show the interior paint codes in Lucite, a Dupont brand. Does anyone know if the Firebird and Grand Prix dash paints are the same?

My conclusion looking at this sheet is that all Pontiac models used the same choice of interior paint colors. I appreciate you posting this since the paint shop I use deals in PPG paint and they probably can pull up the formula from these codes.Thanks!!

what you will find is the upper dashboard paints were low sheen to prevent glare and the lower including the glove box had more sheen but were still not a gloss finish. I think if you check out restoration parts for as many 60's American cars as you can you may find suitable spray can of black. A word of caution with this area to paint; be aware that over the years the parts you want to paint may have accumulated some wax or worse some silicon e.g.. from putting Amour-All on the dash pad. This is a formula for disaster known as "fish eyes". The fix is really simple. Use a good wax and grease remover from a paint shop and then clean everything a couple of times using dish soap and hot water. I would remove the glove box door and paint it first to see if you encounter fish eyes as it's easy to sand the door down and repaint it as many times as you have to. Unlike enamel, lacquer overspray is not much of a problem because it dries so quickly while enamel overspray can get on everything requiring a lot more masking off of surrounding areas. I like using lacquer because you can mix it to spray nicely through a PreVal sprayer which I generally get at Ace Hardware. In addition, should you find that you are getting fish eyes, you can buy some fish eye eliminator at an auto paint store. Also an auto paint supply house should be able to mix the correct GM formula and give you the sheen you want. This won't be cheap but you'll like the finished product.

I would add ... Clean the paint surface BEFORE you sand. Use soapy water and a cloth wipe to clean the paint surface, let dry and then use Wax & grease remover with 2 cotton cloths. Wipe in one direction with a wet cloth (wax&G remover) and then wipe with dry cloth before it drys.

You can get fish eyes but that is usually because of your inadequate cleaning of the paint surface.

I would use Lacquer based top coat as well. Lacquer has a different texture than enamel and it makes the paint look flatter than enamel. If you want to spray with a spray bomb then get a paint shop to mix up the correct paint /w hardener and use their specialty spray can to do the job. It makes painting easier and looks much better. Cost ~$50/can vrs $9/can.

Do many(-4) light coats of paint. This is better than 1 or 2 heavy coats.
