Bought a 400 out of a Catalina. Was told it was a 72 and never apart. Block number is a 1971 400. Tore the engine completely down for a rebuild. Heads have casting 98. After reading it says its from a 71 455 so that tells me the heads were changed. Question is I was planning on Edelbrock heads but after seeing this should I rebuild these 98 heads for the car. Looking for a great weekend cruiser not a race car. Car has 3:55 gears and a locker. Thanks.

114 cc (nominal) small valve heads that will put your compression ratio at 8.5 or lower. Personally, I think you can find a better starting point.

Basic economics really. Edelbrock's will cost you min $2500. A good set of iron heads will be less than a thousand to buy and have rebuilt to new. And you can pick your compression ratio based on the chamber size of the heads you buy.

As well as you can buy dished pistons these days to put the compression where you want.
