Don't know what is considered as the exact date but: - Fifty years ago last December (about 12/13/66) the first production began at Lordstown. - Fifty years ago last month (1/3/67) Pontiac informed dealers that they should start pre-selling the Firebird. - Fifty years ago yesterday (2/16/67), the first '67 was invoiced by the factory. - Fifty years ago next Thursday (2/23/67) the scheduled release of the '67 was at the Chicago Auto Show. (This is probably the official birthday.)

I am not pleased about how every car related paper or email magazine (Haggerty for example) I get have ALL done something for the Camaro's 50th anniversary.
Nothing, nada, zilch on the Firebird.

The Ault Park Concours in Cincinnati is doing a special 50 year Camaro and Firebird display. I know 4 or 5 of the Firebird/Trans Am owners for that show. (I equivocate as the final participant list isn't done from what I understand.) I'm also not sure how many Chevy's they'll have relative to Pontiacs.

The ironic thing... If there was no Firebird.. Chebby never would have the awesome design for the 68 Vette.

Here's an article about the Firebird introduction from a local Chicago area newspaper, (Daily Herald 2/2/67)

Yeah, it's been that way back since the 80's and ever since I got into the birds. I think it's because there's a sea of Camaros out there and our Firebirds, the less popular of the two but they are much more rare, and I'm OK with that. LOL, - I remember the first Firebird I sold, a 68 red/red 400 hardtop back in the late 80s....had it for sale for $3500 and couldn't move it while Camaros are selling for almost $5k all day long. Which I still had that car, was an awesome ride and I loved the red interior.
