Since I took apart my upper steering column, thought I'd provide a couple of reference pics that might be helpful in the future. I have more pics that I'll try to organize as well.
and the little metal stick to the right of the washers in the final pic is a filed down clip off of an ink pen that I used to extract the contacts from the curved connector so I could thread the wires down the steering column.
