Got a chance to get used Hedman Blackjack headers off a 70's TA. They look soild but rusty. Guy is asking $50. I have no experience with headers. Thoughts on freshening them up? My though was that for $50 if i could get the rust off and paint em up I don't have a lot to lose other than my elbow grease.
Headers can be a PITA, and more so if they are not of good quality. Looked at a 2nd gen bird the other day with a big block chevy in it and was surprised how much room the headers had. Not so with a 1st gen bird. Power steering box clearance is especially tight. Log manifolds should be ok for 300 to 325 Hp with no headaches, leaks etc. If you really want headers look at the long branch cast iron or check out high quality headers made for your 1st gen bird.
Agree. Run from headers. My bird had hooker headers when I got it. First chance I ditched them for long branch. I bought some used headers for my GTO which you would assume would be an easy install. Turned into a major PIA and I went with logs.
My 69 project came with a set of hi temp coated Hedman three pipe style headers.....I'm going to give them a go, since they are new and came with the parts stash.....only thing I can suggest is use Remflex gaskets...they have a great amount of crush to them for sealing, I've used them before, well worth the money.
