I have my fenders and hood off for repairs and want to put them back on and then prime and paint the car. Once I have the fenders back on, how can I reinstall the fender extractors and Firebird emblems without removing the fenders again? Or should I prime and paint, install the parts, and then reinstall the fenders?
Dave, there`s never a dumb question, just dumb mistakes...lol
you need to install the fender extractor emblems first ,then install fender , meaning ,paint first , BUT you CAN install those afterwards w dbl sided tape, ( a friend of mine did that after he forgot to install them first !) either case ,best to paint fenders off car then carefully install, use painters tape on edges to prevent scuffing , but dont forget to peel it off soon, otherwise you may peel the paint off too...read the instructions on the tape! friend of mine ( another) left his tape on for weeks while installing an A/C w fender off, no need to tell you what happened....its now being re-painted!
Think thats bad? Youll love this...one day my wife and her boss were discussing the speed of light, neither could remember it exactly (they wound up calling me at work and askin me lol), which is 186,000 mi/sec. Well, this girl that works at their lab overheard them discussing this and was completely puzzled. After a few minutes of "in-depth explaining" to her how it was measured, how fast it was, what it was used for, etc, she looks at my wife, and in a curious but serious manner, asks...well, if thats the speed of light, then what would be the speed of darkness?
Bjorn: Did your friend drill the holes and then use the double sided tape? Or did he cut the studs off of the emblems and and then use the tape without the holes? My car is still in the body shop and I'm afraid I have the same issue as Dave. The fenders are on without the emblems, also what about glue? Rob
Can you not use metal "barrel" clips (they slide over the posts and then you install the emblem and they catch and stay snug on the fender)for your emblems and such so you don't need access to the backside of the fender? I have them and they work very well but i'd do a dry run for proper fit/sizing of the emblems prior to final bodywork and then paint so you don't get into problems with the paint or body after it's done (holes may/may not need to be slightly larger for the emblems to push in without damaging the paint or body).

You can take the bottom bolts out of the fender and pry it out enough so that you can either remove or install the extractors. It might look agressive when you do it, but it won't hurt the metal.
