Did the factory offer dual mufflers on our cars? If so, does anyone have the specifications on dual-muffler, factory systems?
Stock notwithstanding, the only dual muffler specifications I have seen for our cars: offset inlet, center outlet. http://thumbs4.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mlCS5DNJ-gPfa-o6dXckPlg.jpg Inlets are parked inboard, center outlet allows a gentle transition out/up/over the rear, and outside of the leaf springs.
Let's say that you used the incorrect offset/offset mufflers. https://c2.rt-static.com/images/pro...a-muffler-offset-inlet-offset-outlet.jpg If you parked the offset inlets on the inside, per specification, the offset outlets requires that you have to snake the pipes inside to clear the rails, then snake them outside of the leaf springs.
If you reverse the outlets, the pipes will run outboard on the floors, not in the d-shaft valley. The inboard outlets would require sharp transitions to exit outside of the leaf springs, unless you mainlined them directly under the center of the gas tank. Yes! I have see this! In these configurations, bend the pipes upward will give the car lots more attitude!
Again, if the factory offered dual mufflers on our cars, can anyone document these factory muffler specifications?
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. Thanks! That was my understanding: dual resonators and traverse muffler.
Notice how the resonators are offset-inlet/center-outlet? Anyone have good pictures of the repop system?
I'll stay with the dual mufflers because the factory system is a huge cork. Since the board's mission is to impart correct information, I think it needs to be noted that the mufflers on our cars are offset-inlet/center-outlet.
The Pure Stock guys are using a Pypes Race Pro transverse muffler as it flows much better. Pypes doesn't list it separately, just as part of SGF70S system.

I know my convert is a pain to get the stock exhaust positioned so that it doesn't rattle. I changed the big crossover muffler this summer and spent hours positioning and re-positioning to eliminate either the front pipes hitting the convert reinforcement pan and the tail pipes from hitting multiple stuff. The MANY exhaust system and partial systems over 48 years always cost the shops a lot of extra time tweaking the positioning.
