Should starter for 68 400 4BC (1108335) have a shield for the solenoid? I bought a very nice used one and it has a shield that looks like it belongs there but my parts book does not show one.

The short answer is yes. I went through the same thing when I rebuilt my starter and found out the heat shield was added later when issues of overheated solenoids came up. Also, don't forget about the mounting bracket that was used and is often missing since its very hard to install.

Thanks, is the mounting bracket the support brace FN404BK in the Ames catalog?
