I have stock drums on my 69 bird, they work really well. Car has a 400 and what I think is a generic Chevy 10 bolt, at 70mph I am around 3000rpm so needless to say it’s a good cruiser. I was considering disc brake kits mainly as I put a set of American Racing wheels and with slower turns or bumps they will rub a bit and rather than rolling the fenders thought the disc kits may narrow the front track. Any ideas if this is true and any recommendations for kits
Discs are always a good Idea, however, I don't believe it will change the front wheel OFFSET, at least from the commercially available conversion kits out there. If you are happy with the drums, just get a set of wheels with the OFFSET that will keep the tires from rubbing.
I had 4whl ( non-power) drums on my 69. They always worked good enough on the street but the first time on a road course they scared the hell out of me. So what I'm saying is it depends on your use. Front disc brakes will always be a good idea just for safety sake but they may not stop your car any better if you don't really put them under undue stress. But can you count on that? I agree that it probably will not change your trac enough to make a difference for your rubbing issue. Tire size and back spacing is what it takes.
