I´m sorry to repeat one of these questions which reappear from time to time. I did a lot of research on this forum and on the PY-board concerning the under hood´s color. There are two different opinions: the first one tells me the inner part of the hood has to be painted (semi-gloss) black. And then there are Firebird owners who claim their car´s hood had never been repainted, showing the body color on BOTH sides... So, question to the experts: who´s right now? Or is both possible? I don´t want to be marked down at a car show because of a wrong under hood color ...
My car (68 Firebird coupe) will be painted Mayfair Maize this and next week so it REALLY would be helpful to know... :-)
My '66 LeMans has never been repainted. The underside of the hood is satin black and body color overspray infringes on the outer 6 inches of the hood perimeter, and just over the cowl slightly into the engine bay by about an inch. My '69 Firebird has been repainted, but the same black/overspray is present on the hood. The cowl line shows evidence of masking before repaint. Photos available if desired.

On the yellow Firebird, the underside of the hood is undercoated. I have removed some of the undercoating to expose the factory overspray. The repaint overspray is on top of the undercoat.

Supporting Vikki's information: I just checked pictures of a POCI Concours perfect '68 and pictures of an unrestored '68 and both have the underhood black. My '68 has the underhood black (under the insulation) but I cannot recall how much had been repainted 25 years ago. Jim
underside of hood is satin black, think we`re 100 % on that one here... original hinges are "graphite" ...I guess you call it....mine are black , = repros
