I was curious if anyone has any experience with changing out the housing on GM alternators. I know Summit sells chrome housing kits, but I wasnt sure of the difficulty level that comes with it. I have a chrome alternator that stopped working on me shortly after I bought it and wanted to reuse the case. Does this require any soldering? Is there any links or diagrams showing how to do this? Also, I have heard that most new chrome alternators tend to get really hot and short out = crap.
i bought a chrome cover/housing for my altenator last year. i was amazed to discover the ease of the swap. the only two things i will inform you of is, to use oil to penatrate the screws so they don't break, and second is to use long wire brads to hold the brushes out of the way, while re-inserting the armature. if you have the skill to change the altenator to begin with, i am certain you will do just fine on the case.
