Mine seems really dry and I replaced a chain that was really worn out and looked to be after market. Maybe not getting the proper oil?

Hmmm. With the chain off I see there’s a hole from the lifter gallery where the oil must just splash onto the chain

It's been awhile, but I thought there was a slot in the plate that retains the cam? In any case it should be getting a lot of oil...

That is correct. There is a slot in the back of the cam thrust plate and a hole through it that directs oil onto the chain and gears.
