Hello everybody, I am refinishing the front seats in a 69. I bought an interior update kit from classic. Nothing is supplied with the kit to cover the back panels, which are removed to access the cover attachment locations. A quick trip to the fabric store, and now I am recovering the seats back cover piece.
My question is, is there a trim piece around the seat release lever. Currently there is just a slit in the vinyl. I am also not sure if I have the correct padding under the seat back vinyl. I removed the equivalent of automotive carpet. I thought it made the seat back loose and pillowy (new word) which I didn't care for. Anyone know if there was padding in there when stock?
Seat release just is a slit cut in vinyl. Back seat padding was a layer of burlap over springs. Not much for cushion.

It sounds like you're asking about the back of the front bucket seats. They have a large plastic piece that covers most of the back side of the seat, there wasn't anything covering the plastic, at least not on mine.

Oh, interesting..I assumed the leather vinyl cover was correct. I was able to scrub the plastic back down and I noticed it was basically color matched to the parchment interior. I went ahead and skinned the cleaned up plastic back. I think the piece warranted it as it was scratched and slightly chalked. I went right to the plastic with the leather vinyl cover, no padding. I thought it sharpened the lines up.
On another note, I can't believe how rusted the seat frames and springs were. I saved the passenger seat, but it took hours of bending rod to reinforce what was left. I had to scrap the drivers. It was litteraly rusted through and broken in half. Springs had disintegrated into nothing. It is a lesson on why you try and keep a convertible out of the rain. The seat foam must soak water up like a kitchen sponge and never lets it leave.
Thank you for the info. If you ever see a blue 69 vert with vinyl wrapped seat backs..It's probably me. Say hi.
Yea those plastic seat backs didn't seam to hold up all that well. I know you can buy replacements of those. You may see my car someday, it's cruising around Seattle now.

Well I will keep my eye out for it. Im getting close on my restoration. I can't wait to post the final on here. Thanks for responding to my question. Im going to sneak a pic of engine compartment onto here..see if anyone says boo.

Nice looking engine set up there. Looks like your running a overdrive transmission ...2004R or 700? Looks pretty much how my engine is being put together. Looks like your using a edelbrock Performer RPM manifold, are you using a drop base filter, if so which one? Or do you have a modified hood?
The transmission is a th350. It had been rebuilt by previous owner, so my restoration approach has been leave the drivetrain intact, and wait till I break it, then tackle the innermost components. Im curious how you made the observation of the car having an overdrive tranny? I am a residential contractor most days, and am building this car myself with little to no training, so the little nuances of engine building are interesting to me. Please advise
The intake is indeed the rpm from edelbrock, with the enderoshine finish. A friend of mine says I wont like the way the holley dbl pmp runs the car, but I sure think it looks cool up there with the colored metering blocks. I have read the book by visards on the carb and excited to make an attempt at tuning. The local auto supply runs a small tuning lab out back. I understand they have a machine that sampels the exhaust and helps let you know whats going on in there.
The air cleaner I ordered through Spectre, and it came with a drop base. It is snug under there, but I was able to close the hood without any modifications. I sent the hood inserts out for plating..all the pictures of any first generation bird I have seen, not a single one has chrome hood inserts. I might be the first. It took the platers a few tries to get then right, so they are also the most expensive hood inserts..ever.
Thank you for your interest, and I appreciate your response to this, and previous posts of mine. Thank you usmcordy for your service to our country, and helping make this a place the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
Commanche firebirds all came with chrome hood scoops.
Pretty rare to find an old commanche, you may have smart people asking you .

Hey, thanks for the thanks and I appreciate it. I thought you may have an OD transmission because of the cable (looked like the TV cable for an OD transmission) to the transmission looks exactly like mine. It is a LOKAR setup for my OD trans. I didn't know the TH350 could use the same thing. The reason I also asked about your air cleaner is because I wanted to get the same cleaner but didn't know if the drop base would actually work with my Holley carb and Performer RPM manifold. I know you said yours was an RPM manifold, but is it the Performer RPM? Just want to make sure before I go out and buy the air cleaner since there is a height difference between the RPM and the Performer RPM. Would like to see pics of your scoops on the hood when you get some. Thanks for sharing the pics and please post more if you can. Oh one last question,... where are you from in central Oregon? I ask because I grew up in Gresham Oregon and left when I joined the Marine Corps back in 1981 and most my family still lives in Portland area and my daughter and lives in Eugene and I go back there once every couple of years, matter of fact I am going there this year in August for a family reunion.
