Hi there,
I am currently building a 400 for my '68 convertible.. this has been an interesting build as I had to start, quite literally, from scratch... the car came with a Chev350 in it when i aquired it a number of years ago. I was able to locate a 400 block/crank and have been building this up with all new parts mostly purchased through Butler. Now that the shortblock is together I am starting to look forward to the next few steps, and realized I don't have any of the assessory brackets yet.
My block is a 1974 block (not sure what it was out of)... my heads are 1968 date coded #16s. My car was an original AC car, and at some point I would love to put that together as well, but that is down the road.
For now I am curious which brackets I am going to need given my block/head combination? Anything particular to watch out for?

All the mounting holes in the block and heads should be the same as 68. Your best bet is to find a set of 68 brackets and pulleys. 68 has a unique timing cover, balancer, and water pump setup.if you aren’t concerned with being period correct, maybe go with a 69 setup which might be easier

That is interesting to know about the timing cover... when I initially put my first parts order together, Butler was helping me put together a list of what I would need - and it looks like they hooked me up with a '69 style timing cover (APE-N538).
I am not going to be too fussy about exact year-correct parts on this engine build so I am ok with the '69 style timing cover.. but does this mean I should be looking for bracket set from a '69? I assume this will have no effect on which pulleys I need to find?

Clay .......
It has a big effect ....on the water pump pulley because it is now a 4.5" water pump 68 is a 4" ...totally different pulley
are you needing ac pulleys still correct ??
I have the crank ac pulleys larger than non ac ... a very nice low mile original ..complete 69 ac power steering pump assembly.. large pulley and I should have an ac 69 waterpump pulley ..... thought I saw one when I was pulling a 68 ac set up out for you
heres the 68 crank pulleys
and the pump on the left is the ac pump ....

Thank Scott.. obviously there is more to this than I thought!
Alright, I have confirmed I have both the '69 style timing cover and the 4.5" water pump here. So just to confirm what you are saying.. the AC cars had larger crank pulleys... and those need to match up to a power steering pump with a larger pulley as well? Is there anything special about the alternator on AC cars?
I do not have an alternator yet for this build, but I do have a power steering pump.. which came with my car. Now I'm interested in measuring that pulley to see if I have the larger one or not.

Can you confirm for me the diameter of the AC power steering pump pulley?
The pulley on the one I have is 6"... but I'm thinking it came with the chev 350 that was in this car. The pulley looks different..
