The Ames kit is a very complete package, but unless you need to replace every single piece of rubber, you can get piece together slightly less complete kits for less than half the price. In fact, if you can keep your inner tie rods, a partial rebuild kit can be had for less than $200 using a Classic Performance Rubber Front-End Kit 6869FK-R. Yes, it is branded for Camaros, but to the best of my knowledge, it should work the same. It is my understanding that the pitman arm, center link and idler arm are all different between Camaros and Firebirds, but the rubber components should interchange.
I am in the market for a 68 rebuild kit myself, and I plan on using their '68 equivalent offering.
As mentioned previously the idler, pitman and drag link are Unique to the 1969 Firebird. Many have said that they have been able to source the idler and drag link from “rare partsâ€. Good news is the pitman arm is NOT wearable on the 69 but differs from non p/s to p/s equipped cars. In short, The 1969 Firebird pitman arm is a PITA to source! If changing out the suspension and your willing to modify her a bit, new style tie rod adjusters are well worth the few extra bucks they cost.
