A couple weeks ago, we picked up 5 new motors. Finding room for them in the garage, and a means to shuffle them around was a bigger chore than getting them into and out of the U-Haul truck.
Here's my solution, which would work for V-8's as well as inline six motors:
Here they are installed:
And here's two of them, totally portable and taking up half the floorspace:
Casters ~$10 each at McMaster-Carr ( McMaster-Carr On-Line ) Coupling Nuts: ~$1 each.
The casters are capable of over 250 Lbs each. Works great on concrete floors.
dang you're smart. I have one of mine sitting on about $150 worth of wood, bolts, and casters. I actually made them to roll my car around while the subframe was out, but they're working on the engine too... just not as well or cheap as yours
on the plus side, with a cushion they'll make geat little mechanic's seats once I get the engine off of them
Thats a very good idea Q! Especially for the space savings! But for half of the work, half the cost, but twice the space, one could use furniture dollies as I do for this purpose. I purchased 4 awhile back for $20 each and work great. Another advantage, at least for the inlines engines, is a lower center of gravity for moving them around. A bit of a safety factor in my mind. Just another option!
The space constraint was the reason I went this way. I had to fit five motors in the width of my firebird, which sits only about 2 feet from the garage door. Four out of five make it (without accesory housings and manifolds). The fifth is laying on a furniture dolly next to the car.
Great idea Q! Just make sure and take your time when rolling the around. Looks like they'd be top heavy and not REAL sturdy....specially with kids in and out of the garage.
