Hi all Just getting started on a 68 coupe , I think it is a 350 car ( the PO said he thought it was a 400 car ) but I think thats bunk . Obviously I dont know because he robbed the motor and tranny . How do i find out ? Is there a build sheet service ? I am not a Pontiac guy by any means , but I have been doing restorations for 30+ years .
If I could get the names of reputable Parts dealers , suppliers and the such that would be helpful .
Right now I am starting on the shell . It needs a quarter ( old accident damage ) an d floors . Have any of you gone the full floor route ? vs just doing a patch up . ?
Any help in finding parts is a plus , i see the dealers all selling chinese sheetmetal , and assume like other marquees its all the same stampings but at different prices .
Pontiac Historical Services (PHS) will have the full documentation for your car. Can replicate the build sheet information, list colors, options, build date, etc. http://www.phs-online.com
Sheet metal wise, Dynacorn, AMD, and Goodmark are the most common. All have some fitment issues, so I'd say one is not better than the others. (just google them) Also, Ames performance is a really good Pontiac parts supplier. Some members use Classic Industries, but they do try to pass off a lot of 'Maro parts and being firebird. There are some obvious ones, and some subtle differences in others. Depends on how anal you are about that stuff. (I am)
If you do a search for floor repair or rear quarters, you will find a lot of threads and leads.
Or just visit Harold's site for a start to finish project with a billion pictures. (and merchandise)
A lot of members here have extra parts for sale, or you can post in the "parts wanted" section. NOS parts are getting hard to find and command top $$.
Good luck, and welcome to the site!

I guess I will start with the PHS documentation and see what options it had . I see holes where a console was . No evidence of AC . But the automatic shifter is there ., and no clutch pedal . So unless it was changed along the way its an automatic car .
How complete is the PHS service , ? I have delt with other documentation services where you pretty much get the year and maybe the engine .
Got the PHS packet back . Not a bad car . Factory Solar red car . 350 HO , Automatic Deluxe interior Deluxe steering wheel Bucket seats Console Tinted glass Ps , Pb Am fm radio Rally wheels
The bad news is I bought this car for my wife because she had been bugging me for a 68 Bird for a while . Well she has changed her mind .dosnt want to wait the two years for me to get the car restored . And I am in the middle of another car resto right now . So I may put it up for sale , not sure yet . I am not a Pontiac guy at all but this car has some kool lines to it , I can see why they were a big hit . Decisions' Decisions...…..
Nicely optioned northern car, too bad the engine and transmission are missing.
From Rocky Rotella's book, looks like 6,423 350 HOs produced, 40% of those with 2 speed automatics and a total of 2,107 with the deluxe interior.

Order the PHS factory documents for your car. Besides listing all the original options, the paperwork will list the dealership that your car was sold from and the date is was assembled.

You could get production date from the bodytag on the drivers side firewall. Well, the week. There are good tols here at this site to help you decode or you can post a picture of it here and we can help you with it.
I'm guessing northern car based on options selected. They went for better interior, engine and trans but not A/C. About 3 in 10 cars had A/C. Neither my Ohio or Canada cars had A/C.

Yeah I snapped a picture of the tag today will attach it in the next post . Makes sense on being a northern car no ac . We were going over it today and it's really straight . No rust in the doors or trunk at all , all the b pillars are still in the factory red with no signs of rust . Drivers quarter has an old repair so I think that will get replaced . I think the Po just robbed parts and sold it . Someone cut out sections of the floors almost like they were used as patch panels for another car . I bought a new full floor pan and am thinking I will just butt weld sections as needed . As I said I am not a Pontiac guy but it looks like every part is repopped for these cars . I am laughing because I just spent 200 hours inventing door skins for another car I am doing and I can buy a whole firebird door shell for $200. Gotta love the Chinese ….
Any ideas on where to find a 350 ? I will call my machine shop as well he may just have one hanging around . I was gonna sell it but my son wants it so … as long as his wife says yes . Lol
Well some wheeling and dealing and I have the engine and trans out of the car headed here . Apparently it was running and driving a few years ago when he pulled them out . This project is looking up so far . Still curious where it was shipped to . Can i tell from the billing history sheet ? The invoice date is 3-19-8 ( 1968 ? ) If I am reading the body tag right it was built on the second week of march 1968 . Witch makes sense .
The dealer and zone codes it was shipped to should be on upper left hand corner of the billing history card. Wallaceracing.com and ultimategto.com will have zone and dealer listings.
That is great news on the engine, with that car is where it belongs.

Looks like it was shipped to a dealership in Acton Mass . Just got in and don't have my phone but if I decoded the tag right it was made second week of march 1968 . So you were correct its a northern car . I looked the dealer up but they are OOB now .
Do you mind posting the zone and code? Not trying to pry, just expand the knowledge base.

It was zone 01 dealer 021 . The packet is down at the shop , I looked it up on those sites . It came back to a dealer in Mass . Not too far from where I am . Well 100 miles ish .
This is the dealer ......Anson Motors Inc, 469 Pleasant St, Attleboro, MA 02703 There is nothing on the net about them at all . It comes back in 2001 as a Buick dealer which has now become a GMC dealer , and moved locations . The location is now a Stop N Shop supermarket . Funny how there is no mention of them at all . Maybe they were not around long ? Maybe they were not a new car dealer ? But I think they would have had to have been for GM to ship the car there . oh well , Keep looking . Anyone heard of this place ? Zone 1 dealer 021
Occasionally, you can find items from the dealerships on eBay. There was a keychain and promotional lighter there for one of my Buicks. I went back a few days later and it was sold. Should have just bought it when I saw it.
