I have a slight leak in the front seal of the steering gearbox. In the process of investigation I decided that rather than just replace the seal, I'd like to replace the box with a fast ratio remanufactured one. Looks like the best price is Cardone.
I've never worked on steering before. How involved is it? Are there other parts that I should replace in the process (like the rag joint)? And, do I need to fully drain/purge the fluid, or can I just pop in the new box and top up the fluid? The parts are original except the hoses, I think. But, everything under the hood was out and rebuilt just over 2 years ago (by the previous owner).
If you are interested in keeping your original gearbox you can have it rebuild and converted to fast ratio. I had mine done. The give a lifetime warranty. http://www.powersteering.com/
No big deal to replace it. Just check out the rag joint and see what shape it is in. after filling it up, you just slowing turn the wheels back and forth lock to lock to bleed it.
It is surprisingly simple. You need a puller to get the pitman arm off. Disconnect the hoses then 3 bolts through the frame. The pitman arm is keyed do you don’t have to sweat installing it on the new box.
There are splines so without some way to locate the clocking you would have some effort knowing how to install it. There is a feature in the spline (flat area?) that only allow it to be installed a certain way.
As far as the fluid, if it’s clean and fresh, just top it off after the replacement. Up to you
