I have an issue with the speedometer on my '69 bird. The miles do not turn anymore and the speedometer works randomly every time in a while for a short moment. But even when it works the miles do not turn. What do you think guys, should I take it off and try to find and fix the failure or go straight away for a new aftermarket one? What could be the quicker checks I could perform to see if any easy fix could be possible? Thx
Depends. If you have mechanical speedometer services handy nearby (Europe) and you like the look of the original factory gauges.
We have several specialty companies here in the US that do this, but I am not sure how comfortable you would be sending something that far. Although my recommendation below is held in high regard, you should contact them first.
I had mine repaired and it had a lot do to with the fact that I could walk across the street back then when I was working to a well know establishment here in Phoenix. And my issue was similar - the miles (odometer) wheels were not turning.
PS, I lived in Germany for 6 years, so I know how hard it is to deal with some things over there.

Thanks for this hint. In fact I might consider a repair. The speedometer I have is set on KPH and not Miles which is something pretty rare. The 69 bird was apparently exclusively imported to Switzerland in Europe. The one I own was imported from the US in 1989 and maybe one of the old owners found one on the Swiss original spare parts market. There is obviously no possibility to find this feature on the US aftermarket parts.
But I will first take it off an have myself a close loot at it to see if I can see spot anything obvious that could cause the trouble.
I have a few 69 birds myself. I had a bouncing speedo needle and sometimes no reading. Pull the speedo gear at the transmission. Mine had a few of the PLASTIC teeth chewed up some. Also if you have cruise control, the sensor unit on the inner fender can cause this same issue when it starts sticking. I replaced the cable and gears and they work great now.
