I have a 67 400 Firebird that I have discovered used to be a 326. It had a 4 speed manual originally with a console. Someone put the 400 engine in it and I don't know if the transmission or shifter is original. The shifter has a flat handle and the handle is bolted to the shifter with two bolts. I can't get it into reverse because the shifter handle rubs the console on the left (drivers side) of the console. I crawled underneath and removed the bolts at the center of the transmission crossmember and pushed the transmission over towards the passenger side and if I push it enough I can get it into reverse but obviously the holes for the bolts that attach the cross member to the transmission don't line up. Does anyone know why the shifter won't go into reverse and hits/rubs the console? Do I have the incorrect shifter for that transmission since it's not original maybe. I think I read that the original shifter for 67 has a round shifter shaft. Is the problem maybe a warn sloppy shifter. When under the car I can wiggle the shifter linkage left and right and there seems to be a lot of play but I don't think there is enough play in there to make up the amount of clearance I need. I remember driving it years ago when I first bought it and it got stuck in 1st or 2nd gear and the shifter was jammed. I had to crawl under the car and manually move the shifter rods to free it. Maybe this is another issue that is unrelated.
Yeah, 67s didn’t come with hurst shifters. They supposedly had inland took shifters that were junk. My 67 also has an aftermarket hurst shifter and a console. It works ok but I have vague memories of having issues with the shifter either hitting the tunnel hole or the console after I replaced the clutch. Is your transmission lower for some reason?
I don't think it's lower. Why would it being lower make it hit the left side? I guess if I think about the angles at play that makes sense. It looks like the transmission cross mount is located the only way it can be and the transmission is sitting on top of that . I am not sure how I could change that.
