I would like to find a set of headers for my ride but I’m not sure what kind I should use. The car is: - 1967 firebird convertible - Colman shifter - Engine 400 from a 74TA - th350 trans - manual steering - non a/c car
What headers will clear the linkage from the Colman shifter and the starter? Part number and pictures would help Thanks, Joe
I will get things started, from what I have seen, there are only 2 headers most people use on 1st gen birds, hedman and hooker. Hooker has the comp (1 5/8") tubes and super comp (1 3/4") tubes. I have the comp, these are 16 gauge well made, but they have some ground clearance challanges, I always take curbs at an angle. I believe that the hedman are 1 3/4" and 18 gauge.
The Hedmans made for FGFs (4-tube) are a fantastic addition to my car. Added a great deal of power, sound and torque. I'm not saying it was fun installing them, and it took a while for them to seal and settle, but now the only maintenance is verifying bolt torque every month or two. Takes 5-10 minutes. I don't jump curbs and am careful about entrance ramps to stores and such, so no clearance issues to speak of.
Lots of folks here don't like headers, and to each his own. I am glad I did this and consider it a no-brainer upgrade for my car.

Although I have the hooker Super Comps, and like them, and have had no problems with them, there is also the Ram Air Manifolds that you can get. They are repro's of the original style RA Manifolds, the best over all clearance and fit, and they can be ported for a little more flow. BUT, they are expensive...
I have heard a LOT about Doug Headers for FGF's. Especially how they do not have steering linkage issues and tuck up under the floorboards better than the others eliminating ground clearance issues.
They are rather pricey, but I have heard enough praise about them and seen installation photos to decide these are the one's I'm going to get.
I have also heard that Pacific Performance Racing in So Cal is the place to get them from.
