well, kinda. Theres a peice of sheetmetal that welds into the front of the floor pan in my 68 coupe. It looks like the same peice of sheet metal as the front body mount. The actual body mount is fine, strong metal, but right at the bottom where it meets the floorpan is rusted(surprise) like stale bread. Would anyone know what this part is called or where i can get one? Has anyone had to replace/repair/ fabricate of the these peices before? Oh and i also just took a look at the end of the rocker panel at the front of the floor pan, its almost completely rusted away... makes me very nervous...
Ahhhh, dont let a lil rust scare ya, its easily replaced. Id post a pic of the front disassembled around the firewall to help figure out what it is, but I dont have a link to it to display it here. But whatever it is, Im sure it can be replaced, maybe even strengthened better than original.
ya thats whats makeing me so nervous. If i saw a 68 in good shape for a good price i might consider starting over. This car is a nightmare. So much rust everywhere you look. Hopefully ill be able to make it through and be glad i did looking back
A good shell is what a lot of us here dreamed of starting with. You are not alone as a lot of us have started with the same if not worse examples of rustbuckets. My car should have been parted out but has made its way back from the dead, which is one more bird surviving. If you got the time and a few extra $ you can do it, although it may not be the easy way.I'm not sure if that part is what is reffered to on other cars as the torque box, but i do know it is an important part of the structure and should be fixed.I think if it is not done the car will sag(as well as fixing the rocker) Keep posting here, you have lots of support and goodluck, you can do it!

How good are your welding skills? Cuz I just happen to have those for both sides I can cut off a donor/Chevrolet/scrap car for ya if you want em. And theyll be cheap Only problem is, it may be several days before I can get em cut out. You can email me at CDJr@bellsouth.net if youre interested in using em.
my welding skills are... innadequete, but i have a pro (welds for a living) that has promised to help me out untill i learn the ropes. I realize that many people have had worse, but when i got the thing i thought, new floor, new paint, fix up the engine, done. Now it looks like everything that is in the car has to be fixed or replaced... alot different than my original intentions.
btw, does anyone know of a good shop where i could get my rocker panels replaced in northern illinois/ southern wisconsin?
Don't give up. I am going through the same thing with my 69 vert. At least I know almost everything will be new and then my son can sell it when he inherits it, probably a year or so after I finally finish it. Well at least I learned how to weld, so it wasn't a total waste of time and money. Truthfully, it's been fun. Just don't rush it and don't put a timeframe for completion.
Right on Rocky! If the main frame is okay, you are halfway there! Don't let the rust scare you off or make you concerned. We ALL have that option: Look under this or that, see the rust and fix it! OR don't look under this or that and hope the car doesn't fall apart at 75 MPH.
