I have a coil that is on a 68 400. The numbers embossed on it are: 410 8-R
Does anyone know if this is original for this car? How does one decode this?
Thanks!

The 1968 AMA Specs show the V8 coils as a 1115288 which would have a 288 embossed on it. It seems that 288 coil supposedly was discontinued soon after '68.

410 coils are very common on 68 69 pontiac engines
I have several ... a few never removed from the coil bracket or throttle cable bracket....still clocked in factory position
I have seen 288's 0n 67 and early 68's
just pulled a 410 from a 1 owner 350 69 Lemans one came off a 68 YZ one was on my original intake for my judge ,, I even pulled one from a H 69 70 lemans I parted ....

Scott, I checked the 1969 Firebird AMA specs and they show the 1115410 coil. So, the question is; if they changed mid-production '68 from the 288 to the 410, when?

Update: I can see now that the 8-R is actually a B-R. What would that mean?

Larry, A couple months back I researched coils to understand the numbers better. I never found a definitive meaning to the B-R. One mention it may be Ballast Resistor which I did not understand why it would be on the coil. I did notice that earlier 60's GM had coils embossed with 12V or were blank. Then later they came with a BR and even later B-R embossed. I had searched several different GM classic car forums.
Scott, thanks. I suspect it may remain a mystery when it may have changed. I just checked the SUN sheets for '68 and '69 and they only showed the 288 and 410 respectively like the AMA and Service Manuals. Interestingly, the specs are slightly different for the two coils and the ballasts also had slightly different resistances. Perhaps there was also a different resistor wire for each? I suppose I will still search for a 288 for my Jan '68 build. I have also asked a couple vendors to see if their coil repro manufacturer could make a 288 like they have several other Delco Remy coils.
