I have been working on cleaning up the rear differenti
al on the outside and replacing all the seals and bearings on the inside. I just ordered a set of multi-leaf springs and I have the new spring perches.
Now I plan on mocking up the whole rear-end to set the pinion angle. The internet says zero is bad (the bearings in the u-joints don’t like it) and call for ~2 degrees.
My plan is to set the car back on the wheels then measure the angle of the pinion relative to the ground.
I did measure the angle on the old perches before cutting them off and they were at 5 degrees. My concern is: 1) It came out of a different car. 2) I’m switching from mono leaf to multi leaf springs.
Lastly, the old rear end had both the factory traction bars installed. Once switching over to multi leafs, do I still need these?
There is no way of setting the pinion angle accurately with the suspension out of the car. the total weight of the vehicle has to be on the suspension and drive shaft installed with the car as if you are going to drive it.
