First Question on here but I've been reading stuff for years here to help me with making decisions about restoration/repair to my 67 convertible. Now the real work has begun. About to separate the front of the car from the back to change the body mounts. Engine is out, New engine is waiting and so is the TKO 500.
I have a question about what shifter boot and lever you guys may be using. Im looking at a Hurst lever:
So, does anyone know what the dimensions of the Boot base above are? I don't thing the Eddie Motorsports bezel is the right size so I may need to have one custom made. I guess I can order the boot and measure it myself but I was wondering if anyone else has solved this problem.
Also, do those levers seem reasonable for length and position? The car had an old Mr. Gasket lever that was too far forward for my liking.
I gotta agree with Bob, I had one of those when I bought the car, never liked it.
I also have a TKO in my car now, I'm using the same shifter that was on the Muncie before the swap. I just went out and pushed the boot down far enough to see, it has 4106 machined just above where it bolts on, so that would be the first stick you posted. I think mine is supposed to be the boot under the console of a 67 but I forget. I'll post a photo of the boot I had before and the one I have now, I forgot where I got mine but if you want I may be able to find the bill in my records, maybe not as I'm not a good record keeper.
I found a lot of pics I took of the interior when it still looked like it was at the auto wreckers but only one since I cleaned it up. I went and took some using a flashlight, not too good, but all I can find.
Found it, Ames Performance Engineering FR 409 and FR 410. It is for a round shift stick but molds to the stick like it was made for the rectangular one.
They sell the 67-68 shift boot and retainer for the rectangular stick, FR 409D and FR 409W. I'll post a couple pics of the one I have, doesn't have the Hurst logo on it.
Too bad you live so far away, if you wanted it I could hop in the car and deliver, don't know if I'm ready to stay in hotels just yet. Be a good excuse for a 3,000 mile road trip.
Wow. Thanks! That helped a lot, especially those photos. The old shifter was put in by someone who butchered the tunnel pretty bad. The old shifter came out of the tunnel on the side, not even near the centre at all.
I notice the shifter is more centred on yours and mine will likely be the same considering its a TKO also. I Like the look of your setup for sure. Hard to tell the actual size of the FR409 by the Ames image so your picture gives a good sense of size. Also good to know the boot will still accept a rectangular lever. And ya, too bad about the distance thing.
Pics of the old boot and shifter and the state of the car at the end of yesterday.
Looks like you're really getting into it, a lot of work ahead.
Did you get a new transmission mount and crossmember? I don't think the tko will fit the stock crossmember, I replaced mine with a custom one. You'll have to get the driveshaft resized as well. Good thing is the back-up light switch and the neutral safety switch just screw into the side of the TKO and not mounted to the shifter like the Muncie. If you get the wiring all tied in first it's easy just to splice in the connectors to the switches after you install the transmission and engine.
The shifters on the muncie mount on the side and the shifter plate on the TKO is centered so you may be doing some tunnel repairs. I'll post a pic of what mine looked like before I repaired it and with the Tremec in place under.
Ya, tunnel repairs will certainly be happening. I got the entire TKO 500 kit rom Silver Sport Transmissions, and it includes a new crossmember. Still lots of work ahead for sure.
