Just bought my first 1969 Firebird 400 and have a question about the orientation of the engine. Mine is leaning about two inches to the passenger side. The flex fan is not centered into the radiator shroud because of that. I have no idea if this is normal (I don't think it is). Should the center of the engine be centered with the radiator support?

Normal, leaves clearance for the steering gear and brake booster.

The shroud should also be offset to the passenger side unless you have a small block camaro shroud

Thanks for the info. I just purchased a new radiator (aluminum) and shroud. Will get around to fitting them this weekend. I assume the cheap flex fan is not correct and that a fixed blade fan and clutch is what should be there.

I forgot to mention that the engine seems to be angled to the passenger side, not as though the whole engine is offset. The fan sits at an angle in relation to the radiator support and shroud. If that isn't normal (which it doesn't seem to be to me) then maybe the engine mounts are wrong.

Believe us. The motor is offset to the passenger side. The trans mount is centered. Therefore it has to be at an angle. The first gen F body was designed for chevy small blocks. Pontiac motors and big block chevys are too big and are offset to clear the steering gear.

Got it. I installed the new aluminum radiator and shroud over the weekend and everything worked out great (for once). The previous parts must have been wrong because the shroud now encapsulates the fan fine now. The fan is mostly centered and into the shroud as it should be. Thanks for the info.

The carb is on the top and the fan in the front. laugh

There is a fair amount of conversation about how far the fan should go into the shroud. My recollection is "not all the way" (technically speaking of course). Other than that sounds like like you nailed it.
