I am in search of a 1968 YW 400 dated between Sept and Dec 01 1967 even a WQ,YT, or early 68 service replacement also PY trans and ZB rear end . I have a 67 YS block and 670 heads could part trade.
Can anyone shed some light on the conflicting engine codes for YW and WZ. Located in the1968 Firebird Page / 1968 Technical Information / 1968 Drivetrain ID Number Information
A Pontiac 400 block is a Pontiac 400 block. They are all the same unless they are mid 1970's It doesn't matter what stamp it is, its all the same block. if it makes you feel better grind off the code and re stamp it yourself.
I've noticed that but only on Wallace racing. but regarding HP its all about the heads, cam, carb and exhaust combo as im pretty sure the blocks are all the same . so a person should be able to put a 400 intended for manual on an auto.
I agree they are all the same, but I would like to get as close as possible for my resto when i bought her in the UK she had a 1965 396, now she has a 454 I do have a 67 YS block that i may just have to build and install but i keep my fingers crossed. as for grinding and re stamping well that's dishonest I know it is getting very common to do such things which is unfortunate for the people who pride themselves on real #matching and # correct cars. besides that probably wouldn't be able to find the correct font for re stamping LOL..
Just the odds of so called numbers matching after 52+ years is wishful thinking, in reality these engines from the 1960's needed a full rebuild after about 80,000 miles. they just wore out. Guys were not thinking about the whole numbers matching thing when they bought them. My uncle bought a 1967 400 4 speed Firebird brand new and beat the crap out of it when he got it home. He had blown up the original engine and got a replacement. Those days you could go to the dealerships and just get another one. There's lots of cars out their claiming numbers matching. far from the truth.
I agree nobody at the time thought to keep it # that's because they were not classics at the time. but I am ever hopeful of finding one, I am in the process of contacting the clubs in the UK to try and find the original . just have to think positive
