I'm sure this has been discussed before, but which key bow is correct for a 68? Mine is a May 68 built and the keys I had for the past 30 years are the square for ignition and oval for trunk. Looks like the octagon were correct for a 68, or does the built date matter? Thanks.
I have a ton of the original style ignition and trunk key blanks for fgf's if anyone is looking for some.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. "In the 1968 C/D example with the knockouts removed, note that the primary, or ignition/door key, is from a Rochester Products lockset, while the secondary key is from a Briggs & Stratton lockset."
Thanks, I believe you're correct, mine are replacement keys. I ordered NOS key blanks and went through a nightmare getting them cut. I assumed copying keys was part of a locksmith's expertise. Little did I know! Called over 10 locksmiths no one can do it! Went to HD and Lowe's, no go, they only do it if you use their blanks. Had one locksmith quote me $20, went to local swap meet and had 2 keys copied for $4. Ugh!
I've gone to Lowes no less than 5 times with NOS keys and had them cut free of charge every time. It's always a nice conversation of whatcha got and then we exchange stories on old cars. I'd recommend just showing up to one of the big box stores. I've been lucky and the human side comes out when I'm face to face with them.
