Got a back up switch question. When my key is in acc or the engine is running, both reverse lights stay on. I know the backup switch is on the steering column but, if I ohm it out, what should the limits be? If the switch is good, what do I check next? My 69 bird has a Muncie 4 spd and was a MT originally.
on the 69's go under the hood look at the steering column where it goes thru the firewall grab the 3" lever and lift up... have someone watch the rear lights for you... dont leave your key on for very long.. you may burn up your points .... if distrib is still original ,,, use the acces side of ignition ,,, hopefully it moves up a bit.... wire it up to master cylinder until you get the linkage to the trans ,,,,, installed correctly this should /could turn your reverse lights off if the switch inside the car is adjusted correctly
Now that you say that, i am not sure?? I don't remember seeing that backdrive rod on there. I'll have to look tonight.
Judge,
Thank you for that info! I'll see if that works! I'm a lonewolf so i use alligator clips on a wire for the ground to the light so i can pull the light out further to see if they go on or off.
I have a 69 GTO 4 speed. That also has the crappy linkage to the column. I'm in the process of putting in a new shifter with a backup light switch on the shifter and wiring that in. If that all works out I can remove the stupid rod. I have to have backup lights in NY. My buddy in Ohio with his 69 bird could care less if the backup lights work or not.
On the switch you don't need a value to test, it either has resistance or it doesn't. Look here in the factory parts catalog if you're not sure how it originally worked, Group 4.000 illustration 14 http://www.teufert.net/partbook/67-76/4-i.pdf
Just got done with my 69 4speed goat adding a backup light switch to the shifter and removing all the linkage to the steering column. It was simple to unplug the connector from the column switch and connect the shifter switch with some spade connectors. Between the rebuilt shifter and removing the crappy linkage it should be a huge improvement. Can’t wait for spring to drive it. The same thing should be easily doable for you 69 FGF 4speed folks that need working backup lights
