I was brought back to the site by a member in order to clarify an old topic of mine about installing dual traction bars on '67's. So I thought I would provide some interesting news from this years (2022) Barrett Jackson Scottsdale Auction.
While checking out the cars on the docket, I came across a fully restored '67 400 Coupe outfitted almost exactly as my old 400 had come from the factory (according to my PHS docs): Verdoro Green exterior, black interior, TH 400 and built for CA with the emissions equipment. The only major differences from mine was the auction car had factory air and mine had a parchment interior.
The other cool thing was that the owner was there cleaning it up for it's trip across the stage. So we talked for quite a while. This owner had completed a extremely thorough restoration, including factory paper tags and paint daubs and the car was complete down to the rare CA smog Quadrajet and AIR smog equipment. The sad part was that he had completed the restoration some 10 years ago and this was the 1st (and only time for him) that this Firebird had left his garage.
Then we got into the expenses. He had almost $75 K into his restoration and he was hoping to get $80 K or more. I told him good luck with that. Later on that week, I checked the BJ website for his results and his Firebird hammered for $72K plus commission. I was dumbfounded. As a comparison, a restored '67 400 convertible in Coronado Gold sold that same day at BJ for only $40 K, close to what has become "normal" for these cars.
I'm thinking it was the smog equipment and the extreme restoration level.
