My 68's aligment is perfect. Drives straight as an arrow but my steering wheel is not straight it is about 25 degrees off. You have the two posts with the horn on it( left and right) -|- and the bottom post should be center when the car is going straight. I hope that makes sense....Is there a way to just adjust the steering wheel and turn in a few degrees? If so how do you do it? Or do I need to get another alignment and make sure the steering wheel is in the correct placement. This was the way the car was always since I had it. Any ideas or suggestions would be appeciated. Thanks!
I think you could safely pull and reposition the pittman arm. I need to do this, too. I replaced the pittman arm a few months ago and I think I got it off by a tooth. I have heard that some pittman arms only fit the steering gear a certain way, but I'm not sure if that's true.
You could simply adjust the left and right tie rods an equal amount in/out until it's right. This shouldn't throw the alignment so long as you do equal turns and mind the threads.
It's the tie rod centering. Loosen the tie rod clamps and turn each one the EXACT same number of turns in the SAME direction to center your wheel. Vary from this procedure and you'll be heading back to the alignment shop.

Has the steering wheel ever been pulled? It's possible it was re-installed mis-aligned. There is an alignment mark on the steering column where the nut hold the wheel to the column. The mark should be at 12:00 when the front wheels are straight.
I dont believe the wheel has ever been pulled. But then I only have owned the car for 4 years. I will check the alignment of the wheel just to be sure othewise I will go the tie rod route. How do you get the wheel off to check this?
Check it from center to lock in BOTH directions before you move the tie rods!!!
I once had some moron in an alignment shop set my alignment with the wheel clocked what looked to be about 120 degrees off. Afterwards, I couldn't pull a u-turn to the left if I had 4 lanes and an emergency shoulder, but the car could u-turn inside it's own length to the right. It was actually off 240 degrees in the opposite direction.
I can't even imagine what was on his mind, but being that it was the early 80's, controlled substances come to mind ....
