First post from a long time lurker- hello. I have a 1968 convertible that I am restoring. I don't have the original wiring harness. I need to know where the power top switch is located in the dash[?] or wherever it belongs. I used to have a 1968 hardtop so I am familiar with pretty much everything else. Thanks in advance.

Whenever I look at the job the factory did when cutting the hole for that switch, I cringe.

YIKES!!!! Thanks for the reply. Are the two side screws for an aluminum switch? [having trouble posting a pic] Or does the switch reside in an aluminum mount?

One more question. What amp circuit breaker does a convertible power top use? Is it integrated to the fuse block or stand alone?

The switch is mounted in an aluminum bracket. Ames has both. The one in my photo is the chrome version switch but there is also a black version.

A separate 30A top circuit breaker mounts on the engine side of the firewall. (Also used for power windows) Ames also has those breakers.

A circuit diagram is in the 1968 Pontiac Service manual. (Fig 12-50)

Those switches are prone to failure (I've replaced a few on my '68). Some owners set up a relays in the circuit to take the stress off the switch.

I see, now I understand. Thanks. As I said don't have the convertible wiring, but I have several hardtop harnesses. I am looking at a 50 amp rated SPDT Momentary ON- OFF- Momentary ON toggle switch. While lurking I read all the posts about the switch failures so I decided I might rig up a switch to use while working on the car. I will be raising and lowering the top a LOT doing work. If it lasts maybe I will just install it in the dash and be done. I have 30 amp breakers, both old style and more modern marine versions. I figured it was either find a tough switch or use relays to take the abuse off the switch. I already made up a 10 gauge marine grade wire stand alone harness to go from the dash to the power top motor. The motor runs much better than it did. I am waiting on some of the hardware that was missing from the hydraulic cylinders to see if they will work the top as they should. Thanks again for the pic as a lot of my parts are missing.
