I am rebuilding a 1967 tilt steering column. The turn signal switch is missing. I have a 1968 parts column and the signal switch connector is the long flat one. The connector that is on the column right now in the 1968 car is the curved one. I don't know if the column in the car is original. I don't have the entire car harness available right now so I don't know what type connector is on it. When I look up new signal switches, some are flat, some are curved, and some come with an adapter to make either work. Which is the right one for a 1968 convertible?
That is what I am seeing too. I think in 1969 up they went with the long flat connector when they moved the ignition switch to the column from the dash. My 1977 Firebird tilt has the flat one. All my later standard columns have the flat one too. It clips to the tabs on the side of the column to hold it in place. I think all the 1967-68 columns used the round one, but why make separate wiring harnesses when we can just sell an adapter? That way one-size-fits-all and we sell an extra part. So the round one that is in my car now is probably correct. The flat one in my parts column may have been replaced with a later one. I think that makes sense.
According to Year One and Firebird Central, the OEM Delco switch is the round one. The '69 and up is the flat one. Then there is the Boyne [never heard of it ?] style which uses a round 4-way flasher hole in the column. The Delco has the 'D' shaped hole. Now, is there any difference between the standard and tilt column switches? Because I see both being advertised. I also see column and floor shifted versions. Yet they all look exactly the same.
I was thinking about unplugging the pins and just swapping connectors. But that is a great idea! Just eliminate the connection altogether. Once the column is in it will probably stay there forever. Thanks for that!
Well after poking around the interwebs I found out that GM offered that adapter harness too. More poking resulted in finding it at RockAuto as a closeout for $3.83!!! That is cheaper than a box of butt connectors so I ordered it. So I can just plug that in and use the Delco turn signal switch I already have.
