I put my 1967-68 tilt column back together and I used a standard column turn signal switch I had. The signal arm is in the same place, but the hole in the signal switch cover for the hazard button is in the wrong place. Some vendors say there is no difference, others say the tilt and standard are different. Some even say the column shifted switch is different from the floor shifted. Yet when I look at the provided pictures, they all look the same. See my pic below. Tilt on left, standard on right. The signal arm and tilt arm are placed perfectly. The tilt switch would need to have the hazard button located about an inch higher from where it is now. That would surely look different from my switch but I am not seeing it. What am I missing here? And if they are different does anyone have a part number? Could this be the 'Boyne' switch I keep seeing?
I am still waiting to hear from the parts places which exact turn signal switch belongs in a '67-'68 tilt column. But I have discovered this info. Most columns came with the DELCO switch. That one uses a 'D' shaped hole in the switch cover. The other kind is the BOYNE style. That one uses a round hole in the switch cover. So since my cover has the round hole I would use the BOYNE style. GM discontinued that but several aftermarket places have produced them. This style is about 2 to 3 times as expensive as the DELCO style and harder to find. My problem is which exact part number is the right one. There are several part numbers for tilt, non-tilt, w/cornering lights, without, etc, and they all use different numbers so it is hard to see what interchanges. Worse, they all look the same. But I do see that the BOYNE locates the hazard button on top of the switch vs the DELCO which locates it under the switch. This would account for the different hole locations on my switch covers in the above pic. Once I can track down the exact part number I need this column will finished.
It is really a struggle these days trying to find parts for these cars and when you do they are crap. The last turn signal switch i put in a car was literally garbage. The plastic it was made from was like the same plastic used in a soda bottle. No joke. Flimsy and soft. Never underestimate a new part out of the box. chances are it could be bad. you could pull you hair out chasing your tail when its the supposed new part that's bad.
I think I figured it out. The GM part number is 5698520. I ordered a brand new one from garrysgtogoodies in Wyoming. keeping fingers crossed it will be good quality an work as it should.
The switch came in today. I have never seen one like this before. I can see the difference right away. The hazard button is way up top instead of hanging down below. Now the different holes make sense. It has the curved connector.
This is the right switch. It fits perfect. But I have a problem. The spot where the turn signal arm attaches is supposed to be threaded. Mine is not. I emailed the guy I bought it from to ask why. I probably just have to tap the hole for machine threads but I want to make sure before I do.
No reply from seller. But I figured it out. It will take one of my small stainless boat screws . I just needed to tap the hole out with a #8-32 tap very carefully so as not to damage the mechanism. I clamped the anchor pin in my bench vise and tapped it deep enough for my screw.
