I am working on a 69 TA convertible tribute car and was planning on a blue top as 5 of the 8 convertible were ordered that way. The aftermarket tops that I've found are all a very dark blue color which will look odd with the Tyrol Blue TA stripes. From all the photos I've examined, the factory color appears to be more of a medium blue color. So I have two questions:
1) does anyone know what Pontiac called the blue that was used for convertibles in 69,
2) does anyone have a lead on where I might be able to find a correct color top?
SMS fabrics would be the first (and best) place to look. They had the correct teal fabric for my '68 coupe top. That was about 15 years ago though.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. This article about the 8th "missing" TA convert has some information about the blue tops.
"Solving the Mystery of the “Lost” Eighth 1969 Pontiac Trans Am Convertible" - Motor Trend May 31, 2018
"There were a few pieces of the original top material left on the convertible frame, and both the material and the frame were blue, which was absolutely original to the car. But the undersides of the aftermarket tops that were available were black. Rick asked a large convertible top manufacturer in the Northeast if it could match the original material. The company agreed, but to do so it would have to purchase and custom-dye enough yardage for approximately 25 to 35 convertible tops. Rick reluctantly agreed, so his car would be authentic. And now all the other blue-top Trans Am convertibles will have the correct tops, as he contacted all the owners and supplied tops to them. He has a few spares, too, just in case."
ARO Convertible tops in Walden N.Y. Can make you a lighter blue convertible top. It will be blue with a black underside. The originals were light blue with a blue underside. That material hasn’t been available for over 30 years.
