coil getting very hot

i have a stock 400 motor with point in a 67 bird .and the coil get so hot that you cant touch it . what can be my trouble? could the starter be wired wrong ?i just got the car

Two things it could be. One your starter is wired wrong check out the diagrams on this site. The second thing is to make sure the resistor wire is still in place from your fire wall to your coil. my wire was pink.

Also make sure that all the conenctions are nice and tight. A loose connection increases the resistance which equals heat.

also check the resistance on the spark plug wires.. worn wires will cause added resistance to the coil
