Been a long time since posting. Getting old and just want to drive my bird without fiddling with the fuel system. Gas today is not what it was when these cars were built. Have had to change the mechanical fuel pump several times as the ethanol ruins the stock pump. Rebuilt the Q-jet several times and cleaned out the debris left behind. Vapor lock, pump the gas on long sits in the garage, wife doesn't like the smelly garage, etc. etc. It's getting to be a pain.
Thinking of switching over to an EFI system. Maybe the holley sniper 2.
My car is not matching numbers but is built pretty much stock 400 functional ram air. Wondering if anyone has tried the sniper and how it fits under the hood. The RA pan hides the carb pretty much and want to keep that look in the bay, just not sure if it would fit. Maybe I'd have to change out the stock intake manifold.
Anyhow, checking to see if anyone here has done the swap and what they think and if its worth it.
Its definitely worth it. Holley makes a spread bore sniper unit that can bolt to the factory intake and everything will fit under the hood. You could also change the intake to an aftermarket aluminum intake and get the square bore throttle body unit if you get the standard performer intake. I have put the performer RPM intake on first gen birds with a Holley carb and used a drop base air cleaner which fit under the hood. with the ram air pan im not so sure. If you are going EFI don't skimp out on cheap parts that will just be a headache. I have the Tanks INC EFI fuel tank in my 68 with an in tank pump. Everything fit exactly as it should. They give you new tank straps because the tank is a little deeper that holds another 2 gallons of fuel. I recommend doing a whole new return style system with a good fuel regulator. Most EFI problems are because of a bad install and not the actual EFI system, except for the cheap china systems.
Thanks BC. I like the recommendations. Decided to go with the sniper 1 as it won't require changing out the intake manifold or an adapter plate. There's a little for play as the RA pan has couple inch foam cushion for fit to the hood. In-tank pump like you suggested and new fuel lines has been ordered up also
