Hey everyone, I'm running into a strange issue with my headlights and could really use some insight.
I have a completely new setup:
American Autowire harness New headlight switch New dimmer switch (replaced today) All new headlight bulbs Here’s what’s happening:
When I turn on the high beams, all four headlights come on, but the two outer headlights are very dim (reading ~5 volts). The two inner high beams are getting about 11.5 volts, which matches the reading at the dimmer switch. When I switch to low beams, the two outer low beams light up fully, but the two inner high beam bulbs glow dimly (~3.5 volts at the bulb and at the switch). To troubleshoot:
I replaced the dimmer switch today—no change. I also bypassed the dimmer with a jumper wire to confirm—same issue. I don’t think it’s the headlight switch—it’s supplying proper power. Wiring setup:
Green high beam wire is daisy-chained to all four headlights. Brown low beam wire is daisy-chained only to the outer two headlights (which have 3-prong plugs). All headlights have their own ground wire, grounded to the radiator support. I’ll attach photos of the lights in operation to help show what’s going on.
Has anyone run into this kind of issue before? Any ideas on what I should check next?
Hey folks, got this one figured out! Turns out I swapped some wires around in the plug ins for the headlights! The 3 plug low beams I had the brown and black swapped. This was causing feedback and made me go down so many paths before finally finding in my American Autowire manual a picture of the correct set up for the plug ins. Here is that correct set up.
The instructions on the wiring kits are vague on if its showing the front or the back of the socket and which is the right and left of the terminal on the headlight. I have fallen into this trap once before.
