I just put in a new HEI in my 67 fgf She starts fine idles just like a dream, But when I drop her in drive she surges and the engine races like mad! Id doesnt do it in reverse park or neutral. If you dont have your foot planted firm on the brakes she'll go flying! Any ideas guys?
I tried disconnecting the vacuum lines. Its clearly not a carb issue. She ran just fine before with points...

Speedball, I had the same thing happen a few years back. Check your driver side motor mount. Mine broke, and when put in drive, it pulled the throttle linkage. It sounds like yours may be doing the same thing. Try prying on the mount to see if there is play. Or maybe check the other side also. Hope this helps.
WOW I'm so impressed right now! Thats exactly what happened. It was pulling on the throttle linkage! I would NEVER guessed that in a million years Im am sooo glad I found this place. I put some slack in it for now just to get her to the shop thanks again! my baby
Dont let the black and white fool you shes kinda rough

Hey Speedball, she may be a little rough but there's light at the end of the tunnel! Thanks for sharing the pic.
If you ever need a bunch of work done for less than $60/$70 an hour (actually, no more than $40 per hour) let me know. You'd have to get your car to Hurley, NY but this guy REALLY knows his FGFs and FGCs. He can re-do convertible tops, disk brake conversions and, well, everything else!
I actually used a no name off of Ebay heres a pic: its made by a company called WAPP? maybe it has one P I dont recall but thats the same one i have I think that and a set of accel universal 8mm wires ran me about $115 LOL my points and rotor from my old set up were only like 3 months old too but i had "the bug" and just had to upgrade

Speedball I bought the same HEI on ebay around 2 years ago I've got it in my 428 -One problem I encountered was at full advance it was running around 60* -I had to have recurved to keep it in a normal range - max around 44*
A trick my friend Pat did with his '67 400 (now 455) conv, was to put a short piece of chain between the motor mount bolts for the driver side mount. One end on the block and the other on the frame. A low tech racing safety device, and better than solid mounts. You could do that for the passenger side for when the car is in reverse.
If you're planning on taking the car to the shop for the engine mount, you might consider doing it yourself. (If you can swap a distributor, you can probally do the mount.)
All you have to do is put a floor jack under the pan, and use a block of wood as a cusion beteween the jack and oil pan. Try to get a block of wood that extends just past the oil pan's edges to help disipate the weight.
Unbolt the mount, lift the engine enough so that you have clearance, and install the mount. The job is a peice of cake if any work rolling around on the floor can be called a peice of cake.
Oh Im doing it myself. I just prefer to use my buddies lift so I dont have to roll on the ground I guess ill recurve the dist when I get there and try to find the ground problem with my gas tank So much to do~!
